About Our Materials
Not every piece has to make a statement, but it should be made from the best, ethically sourced materials. The Merchant’s Collection partners with vendors around the world to ensure that our pieces are made with the highest quality materials and craftsmanship. Read more about the materials below.
Several hundred years ago, Dutch traders introduced teak to the current day Indonesian archipelago from its native origins in India and Myanmar. It became a staple of the region, used to construct everything from buildings to fishing boats. Teak is an extremely durable hardwood, boasting natural oils that make it mold and pest resistant, as well as resistant to warping and splitting. Due to high demand, it became over-forested and, ever since, has been highly regulated by the Indonesian government. While new teak forests are a source for some of today's furniture, a majority is reclaimed from the old structures and boats and given new life as gorgeous, durable furniture and décor.
Our partners in Central Java, Indonesia work with 100% FSC certified or reclaimed teak. The quality of the product and craftsmanship of these local artisans is evident in every detail.
About Natural Rattan
Our rattan is made from climbing palms that are light, flexible, fast-growing, and much easier to harvest than traditional wood. Commercially-used rattan is primarily found in tropical South and Southeast Asia, with the world’s largest rattan supplier being Indonesia. Because rattan relies on tree cover to grow, the growing rattan industry has helped protect forests against deforestation by providing communities with a lucrative and sustainable alternative to timber harvesting. Because of its durability and flexibility, rattan is a very exciting material to work with. In the right hands, rattan can be sculpted into a variety of shapes. The rattan pieces we carry are functional pieces of art, molded by master craftspeople in Indonesia.
Greenstone is an igneous rock, meaning it is formed from the solidification of molten rock material. It is a fine-grain basalt found in the earth’s crust that takes on shades of green, grey, and black with white silica deposits throughout. Many of our greenstone products come with two finishes available, natural and antique. The natural finish means the stone is left in its raw state, allowing the beautiful details and variations in the coloring and texture to stand out. The antique finish is a stain made by our manufacturer and applied by brush. When the stone has dried, the resulting color is a dark, rich brown that gives the greenstone a completely unique, polished look.
Riverstone is a sedimentary rock and is a relatively vague term for stones found in rivers and their shores. It is a member of the limestone family and has a higher hardness level than greenstone, the other natural stone we use for our statuary. This allows for a more detailed carving in most instances, especially in smaller pieces. The natural color tones of the rocks can vary from various shades of grey to red, brown, and yellow. The more the stone is chiseled and sanded, the more light grey it becomes. This can be seen in our riverstone statuary, as it is finely carved and sanded to achieve its stunning detail. We always leave Riverstone in its natural, raw state. It is never stained, only carved and sanded.
